Harrier Ramblings

24th August 2010

AMW Road Champs - Woodville – a big thanks to the 23 who made the commitment to get over the hill last Saturday for a great day – believe me, you missed out on a great afternoon tea (that’s why we go isn’t it??) if you weren’t there!!! For those doing the 10km it was a tough wee course – whoever put that mountain in at 7.5km was a sadistic swine. But we had some good performances – none better so than the old blokes with Ken Thomas & Jeremy Griffiths both looking the goods.

About Us

At WHC all walkers and runners are catered for, we have activities and events to suit all abilities.
Age is no barrier, whether you are 4 or 84 and can walk or run you will enjoy the social and competitive atmosphere.

The clubs season commences late March and continues through to late October following this we have several events leading up to the 3 Bridges Marathon in December a highlight of the year.

The first half of the season is cross country and from late July we have road racing. The Vaoga Cup kicks off the cross country and the Whitlaw cup is the first road event, a trophy keenly sort after. Both trophies have a long history almost 80 years, as do multiple other trophies through the year. The club members compete during the year to win the coveted Points Trophies, a trophy that any member can win regardless of ability all it takes is doing your best at each point’s event.

Start times Usually 1:30pm sharp on a Saturday afternoon and each event is followed by afternoon tea normally at the club rooms (Parson Street). All are welcome to tell their story of the event over cake and biscuits (or sandwiches if you are into healthy.) Club members bring a plate please.
The results and trophies will be awarded and notices given.

A Brief History

Formed in 1925, Wanganui Harrier Club has a long and proud history in the River City. William Wallace Bramwell was one of those early pioneers and his name lives in perpetuity in the form of the Bramwell Teams Trophy, which is one of the important dates on the Club calendar. Like all Clubs it has been through highs and lows in terms of membership and achievements but after almost 80 years it still remains in good heart with membership of around 100. The Club has numerous homes over its’ history but more recently has been based at the old Wanganui Tennis Club site at Victoria Park in Parsons Street.
